I was going to try to yap in the tags but it was too many characters, so for a bit of irrelevant commentary-- I'm personally fascinated by stories that follow semi-utopian societies in which a group of people has solved a bunch of problems caused by life under capitalism, but also thrown out a few desirable aspects of our current system as they built something entirely different. I think Ursula LaGuin's "The Disposessed" and Lois Lowry's "The Giver" do this especially well. (I've linked the Wikipedia synopses in case anyone is interested, though I would absolutely recommend reading both books!)

My tastes are partially driven by my politics (I really love stories that try to create realistic anarchist societies that maintain a level of technological sophistication similar to our own) but I think these stories are also just really engaging literature, because we get to explore the world through characters that take for granted things that we dream about, and dream about things that we take for granted. Because of this, they can avoid being prescriptive or preachy, and there's a pretty clear route to an interesting plotline as the characters dive into the non-ideal aspects of their organizational systems and try to rebel against or improve them.

I think solarpunk would lend itself really well to this sort of thing! What would it take, to unify people to create this sort of a future? What would we lose along the way? Even if we think these losses would be worth it, what would our great-great-grandchildren think as they are growing up in the world we've created? They should be allowed to complain about their world in a nuanced manner that recognizes that a broken utopia doesn't have to be cartoonishly oppressive. Work that criticizes aspects of a possible solarpunk future without reducing it to something monatonically bad would allow us to more clearly examine the flaws in our ideas and envision a realistic future.

(as a disclaimer, I'm not all that familiar with solarpunk so im not sure if this is coherent?? Also tagging @guutzprojects bc we were discussing similar ideas recently!)

I think a lot of the reason there's not been a ton of big solarpunk-style media is because it's inherently utopian and that leads to a real lack of conflict. Which is a shame that there's not a lot, because I LOVE how Solarpunk looks! But A lot of it is very big-scale from what I've seen; theorizing about ways man can integrate technology with nature, but not really what man is actually doing after that. What are the kinds of lives people would live in a solarpunk city? Surely actual human stories don't simply end because a lot of our needs are met. There's gotta be something!!

I may be born rich, but I'm the perfect philanthropist who has no internal biases against poor people and know the ins and outs of how to handle crime alley! I may even teach Jason something! Any good that ever happens to Jason is because of my interference , he should be forever grateful for having a brother like me and also forever guilty for beating me up one timeee, let's ignore the fact I fought back just as much and was conically still standing by the end. Jason should feel sooo guilty for existing in my presence that he feels obligated to cater to my emotional needs like a parent even though he's only three years older..I'll even guilt trip jason into taking care of Bruce's emotional needs because he's soooo sad and repressed his emotions! Even though Bruce and I never had a day in our lives where our needs were unable to be met and we never had a lack of support systems and jason spent spent his who childhood taking care of adults who should have been taking care of him. But I'm just so small and frail! I need taking care of and Bruce neglects me for that evil 9 year old, look at these brittle thin bones I'm so unhealthy and don't know how to take care of myself I need jason to do it even though I'm medically fit enough to be a vigilante and had enough support growing up to have access to good medical care and consistent nutrition. Oh, but i just don't know how to care for myself. I'm such a genius, but i can't figure out basic math like getting no sleep, and relying on coffee will lead to burnouts. I just want to keep going because I'm so loyal and noble. I can't waste a moment of time to save people! :))) look at all of these cutesy quirks I have no character development needed in fact all of my perceived character "flaws" are positive flaws or flaws that only negatively affect my uwu sad boy self rather than other characters or the plot!

Aro culture is I made some posts about how like when I say im Aro people assume lots of other stuff goes with it automatically like I have to be ace to and I have to do qprs to like “make up for being Aro” and I’ll explain no but then people act like I’m just nasty and then they start like making jokes about my sex life and being insanely invasive and talking like what I’m doing makes me cool but like evil at the same time? And like I’m just doing this so I don’t have to connect with people? And I’m like dude no I’m not “choosing” this tf I’m not doing this to be cool or mean this is just how I work that doesn’t make me like a asshole or a bully or some cool guy

and I made a post like whining about it and people were in the tags being supportive but they made assumptions to they were saying like shout out to the aroallos who don’t fuck or who like aren’t having sex we’re not gross! and it’s like yeah that’s great man and that IS true but that’s so not what I was talking about at all and not my situation at all and now there’s just more assumptions and it makes me feel like more isolated and upset and like they would think I’m gross and I don’t know they could’ve just misread it or something

With the comic I made I didn’t specify if the character in there was sexual or not because it didn’t matter and I didn’t want that to be the focus the focus was how aromantic people who aren’t ace get treated like predators a lot and it’s either treated like oh it’s cool you don’t care and you hurt people or you’re fucking horrible etc and THAT was the point that’s what I wanted it to come across as and be the focus of like cause what you do isn’t relevant if you have sex a lot or not there’s going to be comments like that it’s not about what you actually do it’s about how people see you and react to what they think is happening yk it’s about assumptions but then people started assuming things about me or implying that the character and I didn’t fuck as much and shout out to us and people like us and I’m like dudee nooo you’re missing the point
